“Was It Really Narcissistic Abuse?” — How Therapy Helps You Understand and Heal

ByJennifer Leupp, LCSW
woman in field

One of the most common questions people ask when they begin therapy for narcissistic abuse is: “Was it really abuse?”

This question is often filled with self-doubt, confusion, and guilt. That’s because narcissistic abuse doesn’t always look like what we traditionally imagine as “abuse.” It doesn’t leave bruises. It often hides behind charm, intelligence, or even expressions of love. But the emotional and psychological harm can be just as deep—if not deeper.

If you’re questioning whether what you went through “counts,” you’re not alone. And yes—your experience matters.

What Is Narcissistic Abuse?

Narcissistic abuse is a form of psychological manipulation that occurs in relationships where one person consistently uses control, shame, gaslighting, or emotional coercion to dominate the other. It often involves someone with narcissistic traits or narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), but not always.

This type of abuse can happen in:

  • Romantic partnerships
  • Parent-child relationships
  • Friendships
  • Work environments

What makes narcissistic abuse unique is that it erodes your sense of reality and identity over time. Victims often walk away feeling emotionally depleted, confused, and unsure of themselves.

Common Signs of Narcissistic Abuse

It’s not always easy to spot, especially when it happens gradually. You may have experienced:

  • Gaslighting – being told you’re too sensitive or misremembering events
  • Silent treatment – emotional withdrawal to control or punish you
  • Love bombing and devaluation – extreme affection followed by criticism or rejection
  • Blame-shifting – never taking responsibility, always making it your fault
  • Triangulation – involving others to manipulate or create jealousy

You may find yourself constantly apologizing, second-guessing your feelings, or feeling like you’re “not enough.” These are all red flags.

“But They Could Be So Loving…”

That’s part of what makes narcissistic abuse so confusing. People who are emotionally manipulative often also show intense charm or affection—especially at the beginning. This cycle of idealization and devaluation keeps you emotionally hooked and hoping for change. Therapy can help you understand how this dynamic plays out and why it’s not your fault.

How Therapy Supports Healing

Recovery from narcissistic abuse is absolutely possible—but it doesn’t happen by accident. Working with a therapist gives you the tools and support to:

  • Recognize and name the abuse
  • Rebuild your self-worth and sense of identity
  • Process complex trauma and emotional pain
  • Break free from trauma bonds and codependency
  • Learn to set healthy boundaries and trust your intuition again

In my practice, I use evidence-based approaches like EMDR Therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help clients safely heal from the emotional wounds of narcissistic relationships. These methods gently target the root of the trauma while helping you reconnect with your inner strength.

You’re Not Overreacting

If you’re wondering whether your experience was really narcissistic abuse, that’s already a sign that something felt off. The truth is: If it left you feeling small, silenced, anxious, or unworthy, it matters.

You deserve to feel safe, respected, and valued in your relationships. Therapy can help you validate your experience, stop second-guessing yourself, and begin to heal.
